Concert Review: The Inside Out

On September 2nd, 2023 I had the pleasure of attending CT locals The Inside Out’s performance at the Beer Racks in East Haven, CT. This was my first time seeing the band live, and my first time at this venue, and let me say, I was not disappointed. The Beer Racks exudes a laid-back vibe that invites outsiders to congregate and enjoy local musicians in a safe place with a communal aspect that is endearing. The inside of the venue is basically a warehouse, which gives a cool under-the-radar radar-exclusive feel to the performances. it's almost like being a private pop show in the most unexpected place. The performance area was adorned with instruments and floor lights, but other than that the place was mostly garbed with natural items you find in the back warehouse of a bar. When I told you it was laid back I really meant this place is very laid back, it's almost like an intrusion to be in that part of the facility which upped the ante.

I arrived at the venue shy of 10 p.m. to catch The Inside Out play some tracks from their repertoire. When the band graced the stage they opened with their song “Teeth”, which is a single they released back in 2021 just a year prior to their third studio album No Brains, No Blood. “Teeth” is an upbeat track that is shortened to the point which was a great way to get the crowd going. People began to sway and pick up on the band’s vibe.

For those of you who haven't heard of The Inside Out before, they are an alternative rock band similar to Two Door Cinema Club and the Killers. They consist of frontman James Howard, guitarist Zach Stout, bassist John Landino, and drummer Andi Wright. Their music gives off a synth-pop spin to the genre. You can’t help but get lost in the sound and sway to the rhythm. Trust me it’s infectious.

The set continued and the crowd grew more fond of the band, taking the time to savor the songs and be in the moment. The band played a short set consisting of 8 songs and absolutely rocked the house. Howard gave a solid vocal performance that was both lively and smooth with a bit of grit. They wrapped up their set with their recently released single “Mr. Arrogant” an introspective hit that highlights the fast nature of life and our place in it.
